Competition
(tournament participation) is always encouraged among students,
however, it is not mandatory. The decision regarding whether or not to
compete is left up to the student, except in those situations where it
is determined by our Chief Instructor that the student is not yet
sufficiently prepared to do so.
To
excel in competition, students must work hard and prepare mentally to
give it their all when performing Kata, Weapons or Kumite (sparring).
The IIKA is home to some of the most well-trained martial arts
competitors in the country who consistently strive to enhance their
skills in the ring, in the dojo and, if necessary, to defend themselves
on the street.
Competition
in Point Kumite builds self-confidence, self-awareness, timing,
coordination, balance, speed and awareness. Kata and Weapons
competition work to build power, correct execution of technique, flow
and set-up for delivery of power.
Competition
is a fundamental part of honing and enhancing a student's skills on
many levels. The friendships and camaraderie that come from a
competitive environment help to build relationships that last a
lifetime. Competition also serves to create a meaningful way to
exchange information about techniques and applications.
All-in-all...participation in competitive events generate a very
productive training tool for all of us involved in the study of
Isshinryu Karate.
